The World Equestrian Games: the World Championships for equestrianism
The World Equestrian Games take place once every four years, in even-numbered years, alternately with the Olympic Games. They bring together the championships of the eight equestrian disciplines which are recognised by the FEI, at the same time and in the same place. The FEI is presided over by Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, the wife of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the sovereign of Dubai.
They were organized for the first time in 1990 in Stockholm in Sweden, and they now replace the world championships which used to exist for each discipline. After Sweden, the Hague (the Netherlands), Rome (Italy), Jerez (Spain) and lastly Aachen (Germany) hosted this prestigious competition. The next WEG will be held outside of Europe for the first time, in Lexington (Kentucky-USA) in 2010… And so Normandy is in the running to organise the 7th edition of this international event.
It will be the biggest equestrian event ever organized in France.
The WEG are generally held in August.
